LENS BLOG4: How can I improve my selfies?

Many have commented on these selfies I did a couple weeks back.

1.) STOP TAKING SELFIES! Seriously. If I see another selfy in the mirror in the drivers seat I'm gonna scream. And get away from your mirrors, and put your damn shirt on.

2.) Get the right lens for the shot. If you can't rent one (85mm 1.2!!) then get as close as you possibly can to the subject and crank up the f stop as open as possible. This will blur everything that isn't the face. This is flattering on everyone. Trust me on this. Also, watch focus wide open. While a lot of people like the "nose to ear" focus-- where most things are in focus from the tip of the nose to the tip of the ears-- I subscribe to the "eyes first" because I find that's where my eyes go naturally.

3.) Get creative. You don't have to have a studio setup for this. Just do it anywhere. Inside. Outside. In the shower. On a horse. On a roof. On the street. In fact, MOVE AROUND your subject while they stand still. In almost any environment, you can get 4 backgrounds by moving 90 degrees around them.

4.) Stop taking selfies! But chances are you are more photogenic than you think. Change your look. Use the Chin/forehead to get rid of the double chin. Eyes have it, so look right in the lens. Smile. Or don't. Just do something with your face.

5.) Post processing matters. The ones I did of myself were a single lens (24-70) in my all white bathroom, same background each time. I stood a different way each time, within inches of where I had been before. They were all shot in less than 5 minutes. Post processing took me a bit longer! Post processing (nearly random white balance) really changes the mood of these, don't you agree? Play with extreme settings in your editor. There's gold in there somewhere. Stay away from presets, and MAKE YOUR OWN. Or ask for my Lightroom presets and I'll lend you them.

WHO: I am Shane Etter. You may have seen me around, or you may have heard me here or there. Images and photography are one of my many passions. I've been fortunate to be able to collect some of the worlds finest Canon lenses. Now, I'd like to share that with you. Renting photo gear should be as affordable as it is painless, and I'd like to make it quick and easy for you. I am, of course, available for shoots (still photography or video) and editing, and sound scoring if you need that.

HOW: First, you contact me! Introduce yourself and let me know what you want and intend to try out. Perhaps you already know what you need, or you just want to chat about it and geek out about Canon for awhile. Since I'm not selling these, I'll tell you pros and cons of each lens. Once you decide what gear you need to rent, we'll meet face to face-- this part is required due to insurance, so I will not ship anything whatsoever. You can pay up front with Credit card, PayPal if you want, or cash. If you rent enough gear, I'll even bring it to you! Then you do your shoot, and bring the gear back. Simple as that!

All of these lenses are in as-new mint condition, and are fully insured and guaranteed to work. I believe in 100% satisfaction, and repeat customers.

WHERE? I live in downtown Denver, in Curtis Park and the RiNo district. With some arrangements, I can meet you. If you reach a daily threshold for rental, I will also be available to be onsite for the shoot.
